MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK)- A church and members of a local organization spent hours building beds for children that are sleeping on floors.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace built 16 bunkbeds Saturday at Northcrest Baptist Church.
“All the beds you see here today will remain in Lauderdale County for children who are currently sleeping on the floor. It is our goal to provide beds for them for children who may need extra assistance,” says member – Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Laura Hester.
There were around 7 work stations that helped complete this project including a sanders area, a stainer table, and wood cutting stations.
“A lot of organizations donate thinks like food, clothing for families that are in need, but no one really thinks about the fact that some kids aren’t sleeping on the bed. I know it’s hard for me to get up and function on little sleep. I can’t imagine a child that has to go to school all day that’s been sleeping on the floor,” says member – Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Jamie Castle.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a nationwide organization that began in 2012, since then the organization expanded.
“It has grown to over 200 chapters in 46 states and Mississippi is now the 46th state of the organization. This chapter here in Meridian is the first Mississippi chapter,” says Castle.
Members of Northcrest Baptist Church participated in this great cause.
“The thing that I love about this organization is that they say ‘no kids sleeps on the floor in our town.’ We’re taking ownership of ownership of this city. This city and community is important to use. It’s not just these beds are going off to wherever they are going to be here. We’re going to be serving the people in this city and that’s why it’s so important to us,” says Wade Phillips Northcrest Baptist Church.
Each bunk bed was branded with the initials of the organization. To volunteer to this organization, go to Shpbeds.org.
