There are a number of adjectives that could describe Angela Kinsey, most of which would be in stark contrast to those used to describe her Office character Angela Martin. She’s warm, funny, and, yes, a little sassy. But she’s also busy. So, so busy. If she’s not recording an episode of Office Ladies podcast, she’s either filming scenes for a long list of television shows; touting the wonders of Advil Dual Action, for which she’s the new spokesperson; or helping her kids through another day of virtual school. So it doesn’t come as a total surprise that Kinsey hesitates when asked to share her self-care routine.

“I feel like I could be doing a better job [taking care of myself,]” she tells Woman’s Day during a Zoom call that she’s squeezing in before setting up her kids for their first day back at school. And she’s likely not the only caregiver who feels that way. A 2018 survey from meal delivery service Munchery found that most parents have just 32 minutes to themselves a day. And now that the majority of Americans are confined to their home during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, that number has likely dropped, particularly for moms, who have taken on the brunt of home and child care at this time, according to research from then University of Southern California.

“Moms sometimes put themselves lower on the list of priorities,” Kinsey says. But the mother of three is trying to move herself closer to the top of the list by doing one thing a day for herself, “even if it’s small.”

“My mom used to say to me ‘I just need to sit a minute,’ and that was just her moment to recharge,” Kinsey says, adding that she’s tried to take a page from her mother’s book.

“I like to sit on the back porch [in the morning] and have a cup of tea, and sometimes I get a whole 10 minutes,” she says with a laugh. “I just sit, and I don’t look at my phone; I just watch the day wake up a little.”

The beauty of this routine, which Kinsey says becomes a glass of wine at night during the weekends, is the simplicity of it. You don’t have to download an app or buy a lavish beauty product. Heck, you don’t even need a porch; just the ability to, as Kinsey puts it, “sit in gratitude and quiet your mind a little.”

And with all the noise coming from Zoom calls and news programs these days, a little silence sounds perfect.
