RANGELY | In hopes of providing another after-school option for Rangely area youth, Sanchez Brothers Boxing opened in September to rave reviews. The gym is aptly named after the young guns boxing brothers/coaching duo, teenagers Alex and Jaime Sanchez, both regionally competitive in the sport. Parents and gym owners Fidel and Marcy Sanchez invested in the gym for their young sons to train and Marcy says to give Rangely kids something to do. “It’s about the kids,” she said. A steady stream of parents, children, and curious town residents have come through their door since their soft opening the second week of September.
The gym was slated to open much earlier but due to COVID-19 they were restricted by backer USA Boxing (USAB), the federation responsible for the governance of boxing in the United States.
The mission statement of USAB is to promote and grow Olympic-style amateur boxing in the United States and to inspire the tireless pursuit of Olympic gold and enable athletes and coaches to achieve sustained competitive excellence. Additionally, USAB endeavors to teach all participants the character, confidence and focus they need to become resilient and diverse champions, both in and out of the ring.
Dad Fidel has been employed with Blue Mountain Energy/Deserado Mine for six years, and after commuting several years from Grand Junction they decided to make Rangely home.
The gym focuses on fitness and boxing fundamentals. The family has been pleased with the gigantic turn out for their first class, prompting them to add a second class for an older age base.
Beginning Oct. 5 a class for 6- to 12-year-olds will be offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5-6:15 p.m. and a second class from 6:30-7:45 p.m. for 13-years-old and older will take place. If you are interested in touring the gym or learning about memberships, you can drop in at 303 W. Main St. Unit D (across from El Agave Mexican Restaurant) or contact Marcy at 970-589-1938 or Fidel at 970-417-2281.
