MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Mississippi Power and several local organizations spent their Martin Luther King Jr. Day building beds for children who need them.

Over 60 volunteers teamed up with non-profit Sleep in Heavenly Peace to make 40 beds for children in Meridian.

Co-president of SHP Miles Hester said he’s glad to be a part of such a special cause.

“Everything we build today stays in Meridian and Lauderdale County, this is the first time we’ve done it here… hopefully one of many,” said Hester.

The volunteers have a list of families who will receive the beds once they’re finished and will personally deliver the furniture before the day is over.

Tamara Robb with community service group Leadership Lauderdale told Newscenter 11 there’s no other way she wanted to spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“We learned that children were sleeping on the floor, even a young man aged 14-years-old had never had a bed so we wanted to provide an opportunity,” said Robb.

While many are off of work and school for the holiday, volunteers with the project consider it a time to give back to the community.

“That’s exciting to be able to have maybe 40 kids tonight being able to sleep in a bed that they haven’t had before,” said Mississippi Power CEO Anthony Wilson.

The volunteers started working on the beds early Monday morning.
