LITTLE NECK, QUEENS — A new exercise program for children has launched in Little Neck.

The Commonpoint Queens Sam Field Center’s new will offer personal training, team sports and fitness classes meant for kids aged 5 to 14, according to a press release.

The center will host an open house Sunday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for families to meet the trainers, learn more about the program and participate in a family-friendly yoga class.

Funded by a grant from the board of directors for Commonpoint Queens (formerly the Samuel Field Y and Central Queens Y), the exercise program is intended to help combat rising childhood obesity, which has tripled over the past twenty years, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Kidz Fit Gym will feature equipment designed specifically for children and specialized fitness trainers. It will also offer nutritional guidance and family workshops.

“The opening and implementation of our Kidz Fit Gym will provide support for children and families who need an additional outlet, and help children develop not only a passion for, but an awareness of the importance of health and wellness at a young age,” Mady Caslow, chair of the Commonpoint Queens Board Program Committee, said in a statement.
